Position/Title: Family of Schools Instructional Leader (Assistant Superintendent)
Organization: The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools
Organization Description: The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools (''The Partnership'') is a new nonprofit organization committed to the transformation of Los Angeles public schools so that all children in Los Angeles graduate from high school prepared for college and careers. Started by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, The Partnership will work with a wide cross-section of groups and individuals that represent the varied interests of Los Angeles to develop and implement new education reforms that will lead to remarkable increases in student achievement.
The Partnership's work is structured around ''families of schools,'' ideally including all of the schools in a particular feeder pattern. A feeder pattern consists of a high school, its feeder middle and elementary schools and may include related pre-K schools, continuation schools and adult schools. The Partnership currently serves and supports three families of schools in East LA and South LA with close to 20,000 children.
Position Description and Responsibilities: The Partnership is seeking an accomplished educator to direct the development and implementation of Partnership Schools policies and procedures to support site instructional and operational needs. The Family of Schools Instructional Leader will have full responsibility for the performance of all schools in the family and would serve in a capacity similar to that of a Director/Assistant Superintendent in a traditional school district. S/he will work with an exceptional leadership team that includes leading California educators, a former superintendent of several urban public schools and a former president of a leading charter schools operator. This role will report directly to the Superintendent of Instruction of the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools and will be part of the organization's senior leadership team.
Key job duties include:
- With school sites, design and direct Partnership's instruction reform package; monitor, approve, develop, implement and evaluate site educational plans; monitor quality of instructional programs through school and classroom visitations.
- Provide expertise in developing research-based instructional practices for all content areas to improve student achievement.
- Develop effective programs to address educational and social needs of all students; provide high quality assistance for students with special needs.
- Direct school staff in creating an in-school accountability plan as a vehicle to raise student achievement in their schools.
- With school sites, hire, supervise and evaluate performance of site principals and provide counseling, coaching and assistance; review performance evaluations of certificated and classified personnel and provide counseling and assistance; select and train site administrators.
- Facilitate and assist site principals with hiring of staff.
- Support principals in analyzing student achievement data in order to align instructional and curricular programs to meet student needs.
- Manage principals in evaluating classroom implementation of state content standards and curriculum frameworks.
- Plan and direct the implementation of administrative and site in-service programs and professional development program.
- Direct and facilitate professional development for school leadership teams.
- Approve and monitor school site budgets in support of entire school program.
- Manage the accountability requirements at assigned school sites; monitor accountability results and direct appropriate action to raise student achievement.
- Act as an advocate for assigned schools; respond to parent concerns and participate in parent meetings.
- Maintain ongoing, effective communication with community, parents, schools, and central office staff regarding student achievement and school programs; employ and support parent outreach programs and strategies to engage parents in student learning.
- Direct activities between schools and service divisions providing instructional, operational and community support services; provide problem-solving and conflict resolution support concerning overall operational and instructional issues.
- Serve as administrative liaison between The Partnership and LAUSD, universities, community-based nonprofits, and other viable community entities.
- Review and make recommendations regarding federal and State legislation that impacts school programs.
- Provide general administrative supervision for schools in areas designated by the Superintendent of Instruction.
- Identify future candidates for instructional leadership positions including principals, vice principals and staff developers; direct process to select administrators.
- Help manage The Partnership organization as part of the senior leadership team.
Qualifications:
- Must have served as an effective principal, preferably in comprehensive public schools in an urban environment.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex schools and substantially accelerating student performance.
- Passion for improving public education.
- Demonstrated leadership experience

- Experience in strategic planning a plus.
- Proven track record of consistently exceeding goals in senior management roles.
- Deep knowledge of research-based best practices in the field of education pedagogy, including curriculum design, professional development and assessments a must.
- Experience leading adult learning.
- Comprehension of instructional practices that accelerate student achievement.
- Experience working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment a plus.
- Proven management skills.
- Strategic thinker with proven ability to execute effectively against strategy.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Reflective and open to new ideas and opinions.
- Spanish fluency a plus.
- Graduate degree preferred.

- Use data to initiate and continue improvement in school and classroom practices and student achievement.
- Lead and direct the assignment of all pupils in such a way as to encourage optimal growth.
- Keep everyone informed and focused on student achievement.
- Lead student learning and instructional practice by being in classrooms daily.
- Lead prevention and intervention strategies designed to support learning challenges for all students.
