High School Chemistry, a Fresh Approach
An introduction to a new effective way of teaching chemistry to your diverse student population. An inquiry approach with California-based applications to students' lives.
Chemistry is all around us. Chemistry is us. We eat it. We drink it. We breathe it. So what is Chemistry? It is the complex choreography of atoms and molecules that sustains life. Chemistry is both how we create the materials of human technology, and how the natural world builds and renews itself.
This free, week long, professional development program engages chemistry teachers in an innovative approach to teaching and learning chemistry. The workshop includes the use of probeware that measures heat and conductivity, boils water safely, and includes a built-in RGB spectrophotometer. This probeware can be used to support student inquiry and experimentation in chemistry. This approach is especially useful for teachers of students with a wide range of abilities.
Participants will explore standards-driven content including: Matter, Measurement, the Atom, and Chemical Reactions; Heat, Temperature, Phase Change, and Calorimetry; Stoichiometry, Reaction Rates, and Equilibrium; Antioxidants and Electrochemistry
Participants will get a CD with additional resources and continental breakfast will be provided.
June 28 to July 2, 2010 from 8 am to 3 pm at UCLA.

Improving Students' Academic Writing -- 9-12 and community college
Focus on reading and writing analytically about short non-fiction texts
We invite you to join in the California Writing Project's collaborative and on-going endeavor--to help high school and beginning college students read short non-fiction texts and write analytically about them.
During this three-day workshop, we'll work with a variety of passages and prompts that have been used in the UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam. In addition to drawing on these materials, we'll consider how to weave in the particular texts that you typically use with your own students. Some of our activities:

- Create writing prompts that call for analysis.
- Build a repertoire of teaching strategies.
- See how the "improvement rubric" can gauge growth in student writing.
