Mayor Villaraigosa To Recognize More Than 30 Markham Middle School Students at City Hall Ceremony
LOS ANGELES--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Mayor Villaraigosa will be joined at City Hall by noted defense Attorney Thomas Mesereau on Wednesday, June 9, as more than 30 students from Edwin Markham Middle School are recognized in a ceremony to mark the culmination of their year-long involvement in the HereMeNow Project, an intensive personal growth and leadership development program.
The year-long HereMeNow! Project is based on the powerful adage: “If not HERE, where? If Not ME, who? If not NOW, when?
The program identified a group of approximately 30 natural leaders on the Markham campus and trained them in the areas of ally-building, developing altruistic behavior, and serving others. Some of the key activities the HereMeNow! students experienced included: weekend leadership retreats in the mountains, visits to university campuses, and excursions to the Museum of Tolerance. There were also weekly meetings on campus.
During the celebration, Mayor Villaraigosa will address the students and Attorney Mesereau will offer a keynote speech on overcoming obstacles and the power of service to others. The students, known on campus as the Ambassadors, will recite personal poems, give gifts, and take part in discussions regarding next steps for the 2010-11 year.
